Simple Cooking And Baking Tips

Cooking Made Simple With Tips Anyone Can Use

Many individuals view cooking as a peaceful and fulfilling activity. Filling your kitchen with fresh ingredients and vibrant smells is guaranteed to brighten your mood. Yet, finding the right tips and recipes to prepare a perfect meal might be difficult. This article can help you make a great meal.

Get a cookbook with easy recipes or a specific theme you find interesting to get you started. Try looking online or to your local library or bookstore. Try a few recipes, and be patient with yourself as you are mastering this new skill.

Cakes

To keep your cakes from falling flat, mix dense batters by hand with a wooden spoon. Electric mixers beat too much air into the batter, causing the cakes to fall when they are baked. Meanwhile, by using a wooden spoon to gently mix thick batters like carrot cake you protect the consistency of the batter from absorbing too much air.

Make Johnny cakes for a treat at home or in camp! All you need is flour, baking powder (the kind that comes in a can, not baking soda that comes in a box), and cooking oil. Mix about a teaspoon of baking powder thoroughly into a cup of flour. Add enough water to make a thick batter. Pour it into a hot greased skillet, and fry the cakes like you would a hot cake.

Baking

Before you start cooking or baking make sure you have all the ingredients gathered together. This will save you time and prevent cooking mishaps. You’ll have a better product in the end.

If you are making pastries, you should try to maximize the accuracy of your measurements as it is a very exact science. By adding one gram too much or too less, you are going to put the taste of your pastry in jeopardy. Always try to be precise when baking.

Cupcakes

If you have a cup of coffee left over from breakfast, try adding it to baked goods. Coffee imparts a deep, smoky flavor that pairs especially well with chocolate. Use the flavors together in cake, cookies, or cupcakes. Serve them with mocha or caramel ice cream for a great taste combination.

To save time while baking, but still be creative, start with a mix and add your own flair. By starting with a mix, you save the time of measuring and combining all the standard ingredients like flour and sugar. However, instead of looking at the mix as the finished product, think of it as your jumping off point. Add blueberries or corn kernels to cornbread, or jams and sprinkles to cupcakes for a burst of flavor.

Chocolate

For the most beautiful homemade chocolate chip cookies, do not add all of the chocolate morsels into the mix! Save about a quarter of what your recipe calls for until after the cookies are all arranged on the cooking sheet, then add them evenly to the tops of the dough drops to create bakery looking, perfect chocolate chip cookies!

Brownies made for a bake sale are much more enticing when potential buyers can see what goodies are in them. To accomplish this task, when the pan of brownies has about eight minutes left of baking time, remove the pan from the oven, cover the top with a layer of miniature marshmallows and then sprinkle chocolate chips, butterscotch chips, nuts, caramel chunks and anything else you like to add to your brownies on top of the marshmallows. Put the pan back into the oven for the final few minutes of baking to allow the marshmallows to soften and toast and give time for the chips to melt. When the pan comes out, you will have an irresistible pan of brownies that look as good as they taste.

As this article has discussed, cooking is revered by many as an excellent and enjoyable hobby. However, some people don’t know where to start, in terms of picking the right recipes or using the proper techniques. Follow this article’s advice and you will be on your way to cooking great food.

The Good

Most people said that this kit contains all of the basics that you need to get started, and makes it cheaper than buying each of the items individually.  They also comment on the fact that the caddy is big enough to fit a lot of extras, and this makes it very useful to store and carry all of your must have items.

Another positive that keeps coming up is that the instruction guide is very useful and easy to follow for beginners.

The Not So Good

One cake decorator was very happy with the kit, apart from the pastel colors of the caddy, and the fact that some of the longer/larger Wilton tips don’t fit in the case and allow it to close.

Conclusion

Overall, it seems that an overwhelming majority of people that bought this caddy as a gift or for themselves were more than happy with it.  It would make a PERFECT gift for someone who likes to make cakes, and would like to get started in cake decorating.

Wilton Disposable Icing Bags

Wilton 2104-1358 Disposable 12-inch Decorating Bags, 24/ Pack

Review of Wilton Disposable Icing Bags

Wilton disposable icing bags are a really handy addition to the toolbox of any cake decorator.  They are available as both 12″ or 16″, and are made from strong, durable plastic which is also suitable for melting products in the microwave.  These icing bags fit standard icing tips and couplers.

Save yourself the time and mess of cleaning icing bags, and save time when using various colors.

So what do real customers think of these Wilton bags?

The Good

Customers were impressed with the durability of these icing bags.  They refilled them multiple times without having problems with leaking of bursting seams.

The convenience and lack of cleaning up are by far the biggest reasons for purchasing these cake decorating bags.

Most customers were pleased with this product price, and felt that it worked out as a cost effective alternative.

 The Not So Good

The biggest negative is the issue of waste.  Not everyone is happy with the “throw-away” culture that has become popular.

The other issue with the bags being so strong and durable is that they are not as “soft” or easy to handle as other bags.

Some people found the 12″ icing bags too small.

 Tips From Customers

You don’t even need to worry about nozzles, just snip a piece from the end of the bag and start icing!

Handy to use for other purposes too – tie up bags of marshmallows, cookes, candy etc – but be aware that the Wilton logo is on the bag!

Conclusion

A very handy and time saving product. These icing bags from Wilton are sturdy and a reasonable price. Very useful to have in your toolkit!

Reviews of Wilton Set of 10 Gum-Paste Modeling Tools

To be honest, most people over on this side of the Atlantic seem to favour using PME modelling tools.  They are by far the most common that I see around .  However, I have looked at this set in the Wilton catalogue a good few times, and the price seems reasonable in comparison.  And the case would be a very handy addition to this set.  So I was wondering how good these Wilton tools actually are.

There are 10 tools in this set which are numbered and colour coded to make them easy to find and organize.  The handles are designed to be easy to grip, and are ergonomically designed.  Seven of the tools are double-ended, so in reality you are getting 17 tools! The tools included are:

Shell tool and knife; large & small bone tool; quilting & cutting tool; scriber & cone tool; large & small veining tool; large & small ball tool; umbrella tool; palette knife and 2 modelling sticks.

Sounds good?! Well what do real customers who have tried this kit really think?

The Good

Customers seems to appreciate the variety of tools included in this kit, and say that it contains all that you need to get started with your cake decorating. The case and the fact that the tools are numbered makes it very east to store, transport and organize your tools.

Many of the customers were very happy with what they got for their money.

The Not So Good

A few people commented on the fact that some of the tools seemed a little bit too small to be effective.  One person also felt that the quilting tool was cutting strips instead of actually just embossing a pattern.

Some more professional cake decorators felt that the construction was a little bit cheap, and that there were small bumps and marks in them from the manufacturing.

Conclusion

From what I have read, beginners and home bakers seem to be very happy with this set of tools from Wilton.  However, if you are a more professional/commercial cake decorator, you might be better off investing in sturdier tools.
