Beautiful Red Roses!

I came across this link recently and thought that it was a really great step-by-step tutorial on making a simple cake look stunning by covering it with beautiful red roses.

The website is in Italian, but the pictures are so good that it would be easy enough to follow even if you don’t speak a word!

With some practice, it is a technique that I am sure could be used on many, many other cakes.

For advice on getting a lovely deep red colour for your red roses, have a look at the tips and tricks page.

How to Create a Realistic Sugarcraft Rose with Sugarpaste

Steps for Creating a Sugarcraft Rose

  1. Draw out the shape of your rose using a rolling pin and dowel (keeps it symmetrical)
  2. Add leaves around the edge of the rose petal as you construct your sugarcraft flower
  3. Trace out the shape of your rose petal on white sugarpaste, then cut it out on an angle to make the petals 3D
  4. Starting from the outer edge, roll up one side of your petal, then press in place before rotating it 180 degrees and rolling up again… repeat this process all along each side until you reach the center
  5. Add green sugar

Nordic Cake Lifter

Nordic Cake Lifter

Now here is a genius little idea!  Have you ever spent hours decorating a cake, and then wondered how you were going to lift it onto your cake stand?! Or how about cutting your cake into think layers, and worrying about them falling to pieces once you try to move them?  Well then this is the gadget for you!

The Nordic cake lifter is 10″ in diameter, and it’s non-stick coating makes it easy to clean.

So what do reviewers say? The vast majority gave this product 5 stars!

The Good

The most frequent positive aspect of this cake lifter that is mentioned is how sturdy it is.  But at the same time, thin enough to easily slip it underneath the cake to lift it.

The non-stick coating also seems to work very well, and many people said that it is easy to clean in hot, soapy water.

The Not So Good

One slight negative was that it can be a little hard to store because of it’s size.  A folding handle could have been a better solution perhaps? Or maybe this would compromise the sturdy nature of the cake lifter?

Tips On Using the Nordic Ware Cake Lifter

Spray the cake lifter with a little bit of cooking spray before using to ensure that the cake slides off easily.

Great for lifting pizzas too! And flipping pancakes.  And turning and serving quesadillas. And lifting cookie dough onto a baking sheet.

Have you got any more ideas for what this cake lifter could be used for?

New Cake Decorating Beginner’s Guide

… So basically the Wiltons 50 piece caddy and decorating set contains everything you need to get started and decorate your cake.

So the next thing is – is it any good?!  Lets ask some of the reviewers..

The Good

Most people said that this kit contains all of the basics that you need to get started, and makes it cheaper than buying each of the items individually.  They also comment on the fact that the caddy is big enough to fit a lot of extras, and this makes it very useful to store and carry all of your must have items.

Another positive that keeps coming up is that the instruction guide is very useful and easy to follow for beginners.

The Not So Good

One cake decorator was very happy with the kit, apart from the pastel colors of the caddy, and the fact that some of the longer/larger Wilton tips don’t fit in the case and allow it to close.

Conclusion

Overall, it seems that an overwhelming majority of people that bought this caddy as a gift or for themselves were more than happy with it.  It would make a PERFECT gift for someone who likes to make cakes, and would like to get started in cake decorating.

Review of Oxo Good Grips Scraper and Chopper

This little Oxo Good Grips Scraper and Chopper gadget has been a best seller on Amazon for quite a long time.  With over 200 customer reviews, I got curious about why this is so popular.

It seems that there are many uses for this tool, from working dough on a board, to scraping, chopping, crushing and even measuring!  The handle is designed with comfort in mind (hence the name!), and it is easy to use and easy to clean.

So what do real customers say in their reviews about the Oxo Good Grips Scraper and Chopper?

The Good

Customers really seem to appreciate the measurements that are etched into the blade.  They can be used to measure dough thickness, brownie sizes or ingredient amounts.

There are also many comments on the sturdy, durable construction, the comfortable handle, and the ease of cleaning in the dishwasher!

The Not So Good

A small minority of people found the handle uncomfortable, and there were a couple of comments from people who said that the blade was too flimsy. Two (out of the 200) also commented that their product rusted.

Tips From Customers

Use for measuring dough thickness; creating perfect squares; drawing straight lines; chopping onions; cutting herbs; scraping chopping boards; dicing. There seems to be no end of uses!

One customer even said that the measuring lines have eliminated arguments from her kids over who got the biggest piece!

Reviews of Wilton Set of 10 Gum-Paste Modeling Tools

To be honest, most people over on this side of the Atlantic seem to favour using PME modelling tools.  They are by far the most common that I see around .  However, I have looked at this set in the Wilton catalogue a good few times, and the price seems reasonable in comparison.  And the case would be a very handy addition to this set.  So I was wondering how good these Wilton tools actually are.

There are 10 tools in this set which are numbered and colour coded to make them easy to find and organize.  The handles are designed to be easy to grip, and are ergonomically designed.  Seven of the tools are double-ended, so in reality you are getting 17 tools! The tools included are:

Shell tool and knife; large & small bone tool; quilting & cutting tool; scriber & cone tool; large & small veining tool; large & small ball tool; umbrella tool; palette knife and 2 modelling sticks.

Sounds good?! Well what do real customers who have tried this kit really think?

The Good

Customers seems to appreciate the variety of tools included in this kit, and say that it contains all that you need to get started with your cake decorating. The case and the fact that the tools are numbered makes it very east to store, transport and organize your tools.

Many of the customers were very happy with what they got for their money.

The Not So Good

A few people commented on the fact that some of the tools seemed a little bit too small to be effective.  One person also felt that the quilting tool was cutting strips instead of actually just embossing a pattern.

Some more professional cake decorators felt that the construction was a little bit cheap, and that there were small bumps and marks in them from the manufacturing.

Conclusion

From what I have read, beginners and home bakers seem to be very happy with this set of tools from Wilton.  However, if you are a more professional/commercial cake decorator, you might be better off investing in sturdier tools.
