How much fun is cake decorating? I’ve always been fascinated with the magic  in sugar craft and then being able to share a delicious cake with others. What a treat on so many levels.

When my first daughter was turning one, I had a desire to make her birthday cake even though I was a complete beginner in the world of cake artistry.

I knew nothing about cake decorating but  I found a picture of a cute lady bug cake from an old Woman’s Weekly magazine that was about 30 years old and so I muddled my way through trying to decorate the cake. It was butter cream icing and I had no idea what was doing. Really no idea. Let me tell you, it was a labor of love. I found myself up until 3 am in the morning, tirelessly perfecting the buttercream to achieve that flawless look and the moment I finished, I sat back, proudly admiring my masterpiece, but the kitchen looked like a whirlwind had swept through. I didn’t care though. I had achieved making my first cake and I was proud as punch.

Since then I’ve had 2 more daughters and hence have decorated many more birthday cakes. I only work with Fondant now but I totally love admiring and eating a buttercream cake. Yum!

Happy Cake Decorating!
